The neighbouring property is large and imposing, so the new home was carefully oriented toward a private garden.

A mature Lillipilli tree became the heart of the design, anchoring the house and landscape with its generous canopy and providing a strong connection to nature. Given the site’s exposure, the design needed to create its own microclimate and sense of enclosure.

A courtyard-style plan was developed, framing the tree and gardens while establishing a clear transition from public to private spaces. Landscaped areas wrap around the house, complemented by a rooftop garden and plunge pool that support cooling and biodiversity.

Internal spaces follow a central spine: a children’s wing, communal areas, and an upper level with a parent’s suite, study, and music studio overlooking the roof garden. Sliding doors and level changes enhance spatial flexibility and privacy.

Replacing an asbestos-clad house, the project is now a certified passive house, designed for longevity and climate resilience. Cross-Laminated Timber (CLT) was selected for its thermal performance, low toxicity, and minimal environmental impact. Its warm, tactile finish is contrasted with colourful tiles and painted joinery that bring a playfulness to the interior.

The house balances openness to the street with privacy, using a shaded western deck with operable panels. A ventilated façade mitigates solar exposure and overheating. An entry sequence through a screened courtyard and pond establishes a calming arrival and a considered transition into the private home.

The resulting design is a modestly scaled, low-energy home that performs under extreme conditions while offering flexibility, comfort, and connection to nature. It provides a quiet refuge and a vibrant family home that responds holistically to place, climate, and community.

The clients are a creative, music-loving family of two adults and three children. Their lifestyle is informal, collaborative, and deeply tied to self-expression. Music and making are part of everyday life, and the house needed to accommodate moments of spontaneous creativity while supporting quieter rhythms of family life.

Flexibility, comfort, and sustainability were fundamental to the brief. The family also values environmental stewardship and sought a home that would minimise its footprint without compromising liveability. The design balances usability and sustainability by embedding flexible, intuitive spaces within a long-lasting and low-maintenance envelope.

Acoustic performance was a key concern given the family’s musical activities, so natural materials with inherent sound-dampening properties were selected. These choices, along with passive design strategies such as continuous insulation, airtight membrane, no thermal bridges, mechanical and cross-ventilation, and appropriate solar orientation, contribute to both acoustic comfort and environmental performance.

Material selections prioritised durability, sustainability, and local provenance. Timber elements were FSC-certified, while interior linings avoided synthetic composites. A rooftop solar system, rainwater harvesting, and low-energy lighting further enhance environmental outcomes.

The CLT structural design is deliberately legible and robust, inviting the family to understand, interact with, and maintain their home’s sustainability features without specialist knowledge. The project was guided by detailed research into materials and systems suited to residential scale, including Life Cycle Assessments and embodied energy comparisons.

Where possible, selections were backed by environmental product declarations and data on maintenance cycles. This home is not only a space for living but a space for learning—about music, about nature, and about sustainable ways of being. It demonstrates that highly personalised, creative homes can also be high-performing and climate-conscious, delivering delight without compromise

The initial brief was to create a nurturing and uplifting home for a family of five—a place that balanced creativity, comfort, and environmental responsibility. With a shared love of Nordic and Japanese architecture, the clients imagined a warm, minimal, and light-filled home that would foster calm and creativity in equal measure.

The thermal comfort, low energy use, and year-round air quality aligned closely with their priorities. Importantly, given the block’s western aspect, Passive House design offered a robust solution to overheating and helped future-proof the home against climate change.

This brief led to a highly original, deeply personal design that merges function, form, and sustainability. A holistic approach underpinned all aspects—from locally sourced, healthy materials to low-maintenance systems and measured performance outcomes.

Each decision reinforced the idea that sustainability can be intuitive, beautiful, and long-lasting in a residential context. The result is a home that balances usability and environmental innovation—designed not just for this family, but as a model for future living.
