Having installed the canopies over the new grandstand at the Royal Randwick Racecourse in Randwick, NSW, MakMax Australia was once again approached to design, engineer and install an HDPE shade canopy over the loading dock. The main purpose of the new canopy structure was to hide the view of the loading dock from the newly built grandstand.

The new HDPE shade canopy was to be fixed to an existing concrete structure to cover the loading dock area, which is situated between two buildings.

The Concept

The HDPE mesh fabric panel covering the Royal Randwick loading dock area measured approximately 20 x 20 square metres and was handmade by MakMax Australia at their state-of-the-art fabrication facility in Brisbane.

The Royal Randwick loading dock project was a customised fabrication project where the client, the Australian Turf Club (ATC) sought a 4m x 4m logo to be affixed to the top-side of the new 350m² HDPE shade canopy.

The Materials

The team at Gale Pacific provided invaluable advice and assistance on this project to propose the best fabric solution. The loading dock structure is made from Gale Pacific’s Commercial Heavy 430 FR in Navy Blue and features the ATC logo in the same fabric in Desert Sand colour.

The MakMax fabrication team used a plotter to cut out the logo shape in the sand-coloured HDPE, before carefully aligning and hand-stitching the logo pieces in the centre of the fabricated Navy Blue panels. Final machine stitching secured the logo in place on the fully-fabricated membrane panel ready for installation at the Royal Randwick loading dock.

The project was completed in March 2022.
