MAXI BEAMS were used in the SUPAFINISH concept veneer, Hoop Pine Limed, for a suspended beam ceiling feature at the Cairns Central Shopping Centre in Queensland.

The design of the ceiling ensured the beams could be seen through, revealing the bright, airy ceiling above, mimicking windows letting in natural light.

Cairns Central Shopping Centre

The project, a regional shopping centre in Carins, Queensland, was redeveloped to improve the shopping experience of visitors, and allow the centre to add new and exclusive brands. Buchan was assigned as architect on the project.

Commenting on the design, Buchan senior interior designer, Kathryn Grant said:

“Our overall vision for the fresh food market hall was to optimise the tropical industrial aesthetic to modernise the shopping and dining experience for our local and tourist customer base. Influenced by Reef to Rainforest as a visual concept, the result is a striking yet balanced layering of natural materials with a base palette of timber, ocean blue and greenery. We’ve created a relaxed dining and fresh food offer that creates a place to meet, dwell, shop and dine in an impressionable and vibrant surrounding.”

For the SUPAWOOD beam feature ceiling supplied for the central market food hall, beams were mitred and included a 50mm rebated capping. Custom fixing was developed and used for the fixing of the MAXI BEAMS to ensure the installation was safe, and the fixing used was the best, tailored option for the specific case.

In addition to this, the MAXI BEAMS were supplied in fire retardant ‘FR’ material, ensuring the fire safety requirements of the public space were met.
