To his colleagues at T&Z Architects, Maxim John Zuvela (1940-2022) was much more than an architect or a boss. A born leader who helmed the successful Perth-based practice for over 5 decades right from its inception in 1965, Max Zuvela was not only a mentor to everyone at T&Z but also a great inspiration to an entire generation of architects.

In a tribute published in Architectureau.com, T&Z director Jeremy Feldhusen recalled how Zuvela “fostered a thriving practice that continues to have a significant impact on Perth’s architectural landscape”.

Providing architectural, masterplanning and project management services across commercial and institutional projects throughout Western Australia, T&Z’s focus on community-driven projects in the education and aged care sectors is attributed to Zuvela, who sought to balance corporate work with the broader interests of the community.

Within the practice, he “led a tight-knit team that became, for most, a second family, with many remaining with the firm for decades”, Feldhusen said. Zuvela fostered a collaborative approach that balanced the client’s needs with the design team’s contributions, helping achieve the best possible outcomes for each project.

Max Zuvela passed away in October 2022.
