Leading plasterboard manufacturer Knauf partners with customers right from the design and specification stages through to the project delivery and end of life.

Whether used to construct a house or hospital, plasterboard possesses the characteristics of sustainable building products and can readily be incorporated into projects requiring Green Star or other program certifications.

By its very composition, plasterboard is an ideal material for sustainable construction. Gypsum is derived from natural Australian sources as non-toxic and natural rock, while FGD gypsum comes from removing sulphur dioxide gas emissions at electric power plants. In addition to gypsum, paper recycled from magazines, office paper and newsprint is used to manufacture plasterboard. Process water and production waste recycled within the factory are reused to create the gypsum slurry. Plasterboard also contains additives to enhance fire resistance, moisture resistance and acoustic properties.

Plasterboard is a lightweight building material, which reduces transport costs and emissions as well as the total weight of buildings. Gluts fabricated from waste plasterboard are used to package the finished plasterboard for storage and transport.

Plasterboard is a 100% recyclable material, and can be recycled into new plasterboard, or soil conditioner for farming and rehabilitation of mine sites. The energy used in the manufacture of plasterboard is amongst the lowest of any building product.

As part of its involvement in the Gypsum Board Manufacturers Association (GBMA), Knauf participated in a Life Cycle Assessment (LCA) for plasterboard in Australia and New Zealand. The ‘cradle to grave’ assessment establishes a benchmark for reducing the environmental impacts of plasterboard and offers a comparison with other building materials.
