The award winning Ecovillage at Currumbin has taken eco-friendliness to new heights – the roof.

Chris Walton, Managing Director and home owner at the Ecovillage has incorporated eco-considerations into the design of the roof on his new home.

“The concept behind the Ecovillage is sustainable living and development practices exemplified by world’s best practice. Therefore, it was important that every aspect of the home reflected this concept. The roofing system needed to use fewer resources, cater for clean water collection, provide excellent insulation, be installed quickly and be able to be constructed in a curved configuration, ” said Chris Walton.

Ritek Building Solutions was chosen to provide a roofing system because it offered significant benefits and was eco-friendly.

The Ritek Custom Roof Panel incorporates BlueScope Steel Custom Orb sheeting as the lining for the roof (top sheet) and ceiling (bottom sheet) which is bonded by profiled thermal efficient polystyrene.

In the Ecovillage design, a galvanised top sheet was used for the roof providing a modern architectural design that still reflects our traditional Queensland heritage.

The Ecovillage has attained total water self-sufficiency, making clean water collection an important consideration which is another reason for the choice of the galvanised roofing sheet.

Utilising Ritek’s Custom Roofing Panel reduced the need for traditional support members and eliminated the need for sheeting of the soffits and ceilings resulting in significant savings on resources and enabling the roof to be installed quickly and efficiently.

The high thermal insulation value of the product means increased energy efficiency for the eco-home and the reduction of heat radiating from the underside of the panel. This ultimately results in reduced energy bills associated with cooling and heating requirements.

“The Ritek Custom Roof Panel lends itself to such a wide variety of designs as it can be used in straight, curved or multi-curved configurations, yet it is simple and quick to install and offers many environmental advantages.

Its strength allows for large unsupported spans which enables some really innovative designs and is also great for use where unobstructed views are required. It is for these reasons that the product has gained such popularity in the market,” said Ben Sutton, Product Manager for Ritek Building Solutions
