Nestled in forest in the Kangaroo Valley, a tiny house with an extraordinary bathroom outhouse provides city dwellers with the perfect escape.

“Somewhere along the way, we lost touch. With ourselves and what is most important – our environment and the people in it. The realities of modern life are eroding the base of our existence. Each other.” Is how Michael Lamprell, founder of CABN, explains the philosophy behind his creations.

“CABN was set up to help provide people with a means to disconnect from the crazy we have brought upon ourselves. Our completely off-grid, sustainable and eco-friendly tiny houses set in some of Australia’s most stunning and stimulating landscapes offer an ideal escape.”

Rarely has this kind of escape pod been executed so well.

In a space so small, form must follow function. The striking Ecoply® plywood interior offers a warmth and modernity but is also very functional. Used throughout, the structural and durable nature of Ecoply makes it appropriate for stairs, mezzanine, lining, the bed, the kitchen cabinets etc. And with a nod to Japanese and Scandinavian influences, the finish is raw so there’s also no need for painting.

Ecoply is made from locally harvested, Australian timber and is incredibly efficient in its use of the resource. FSC® certification guarantees that the timber is also sourced from sustainably managed forests. It’s the perfect material for use in these CABNs where composting toilets, rainwater catchment and solar power ensure there is as little impact on the environment as possible.

“All our materials are sustainable when possible, it’s crucial that we prioritise the environment with everything we do,” explained Shane Laidlaw, head of research and development at CABN.

“The inspiration behind CABNs are to be minimalist, yet beautiful and fit within the landscapes we place them.”

With another three CABNs placed in the picturesque Adelaide Hills and the Kuitpo forest and more on the agenda, the lightness of touch is critical.

CABN offers city dwellers a chance to take a breather from life and step away from technology – a chance to stop and see the wood for the trees. What better way to do that than from a plywood haven?
