Commuters using Towradgi Station will soon have a new ticket to ride with accessibility upgrades currently underway. These upgrades include a nature-themed metal footbridge made with Arrow Metal perforated screens.

We worked with long-standing Arrow Metal customer Steelworks Engineering to help fulfil the station’s upgrade, part of the NSW Government Transport Access Program that improves public transport accessibility.

Towradgi Station

The new metal footbridge will connect Towradgi’s two platforms, making train travel easier for people with disabilities, limited mobility, prams, and luggage. We also manufactured matching staircase balustrade and lift landing screens, creating a cohesive design scheme throughout the station.

An all-weather perforated metal footbridge

Towradgi Station

The new perforated metal footbridge, staircase, and landing screens feature a complex tree design by architects DesignInc created using our PixelPerf custom perforation service. PixelPerf replicates any image in perforated metal, including photos, graphics, drawings, text, and logos.

One of the biggest design challenges was providing customers with protection from the elements. The solution was to sandwich clear 12mm polycarbonate screening between a double layer of identically perforated sheets to maximise light and visibility whilst offering rain and wind protection without compromising the aesthetics of the intricate pattern.

All the edges of the 3mm perforated aluminium screens were folded for extra strength and finished in a Shale Grey powdercoating, complementing the contemporary style of the new-look station under construction by Degnan.

Arrow Metal: Infrastructure upgrade expertise

Towradgi Station, which opened in 1948, is the latest stop of our successful track record in train station and public transport upgrade projects. Some of the other train stations that feature Arrow Metal cladding on the bridges, walls, and screening, include Como Station’s glamorous gold underpass also in collaboration with DesignInc and Degnan, Hazelbrook Station’s mix-and-match footbridge, Harris Park’s geometric walkway, and Oatley Station’s spectacular perforated triangle bridge.
