Located upon Brisbane’s waterfront, Conrad Gargett can not lay claim to designing Maritimo, but they can certainly claim to its re-lifing.

Completed in 1925 and designed by prominent local architects Hall and Prentice (Brisbane City Hall), the dwelling’s Californian Bungalow and Spanish Mission characteristics differentiate it from homes constructed at a similar time. Spacious river-facing verandahs, a grand ballroom and car spaces, as well as gardens and a tennis court underline its individuality.

Conrad Gargett was engaged by the client to refurbish, upgrade and enhance the living experience within the home. Character was to be maintained, but a contemporary living style was to be established.

A master bedroom at roof level with views framed out to the Brisbane River and New Farm Park was added, with a sculptural stairwell and lift added to improve overall access. The bedroom is imagined as an attic extension, and is reached via the stairs.

A new, contemporary open-plan kitchen and new bathrooms were created through the repurposing of existing rooms, while a new entertainment area steps down to the tennis court. Conrad Gargett also undertook a number of conservation works on the home, to ensure it would remain safeguarded from further deterioration.

Conrad Gargett’s thoughtful uplift of Maritimo has maintained the essence of the Hall and Prentice-designed dwelling, while undertaking necessary conservation work. The entire project has slightly adjusted the home’s internal spaces, providing a comfortable residence defined by its heritage.
