The Green Building Council of Australia (GBCA) has announced its Green Star Champions and Future Green Leader Award winners for 2021, with a range of industry leaders recognised for their efforts.

28 industry personalities were named Green Star Champions, while Kate Rowan was named the Future Green Leader Award winner for her work on the Melbourne Metro Tunnel Project.

GBCA CEO Davina Rooney says Green Star Champion recognition acknowledges the ongoing commitment of leaders using Green Star to deliver sustainable buildings and communities that are healthy, resilient and positive.

“The Green Star Champions are ambassadors for Australian excellence in the sustainable transformation of the built environment. Their vision, enthusiasm and tireless contribution to deliver places that respond to the climate challenge through Green Star can’t be overstated,” she says.

“They are an inspiration to our industry’s future leaders and today we celebrate their work, passion and dedication to lowering emissions through world leading Green Star projects.”

Robin Brimblecombe, Engineering & Sustainability Manager, Monash University, was among the Green Star Champion recipients for 2021. He says the recognition is part of a bigger picture for sustainable design within Australia.

“Green Star Future Focus is an inspiring and achievable roadmap for an equitable, renewable powered future. I am honoured to have contributed to its development and excited to work with GBCA to make it the new standard for Australian buildings.”

The judging panel for the Future Green Leader of the Year Award named Kate Rowan as the winner of the prestigious gong. Impressed by her tenacity, vision and commitment in tackling the big issues as Sustainability Advisor on Melbourne’s Metro Tunnel Project, the panel believe she has the edge over fellow nominees Sarah Lawlor, Tatiana Schönhöbel and HY William Chan as a young leader in the sector.

Rowan says the recognition will help her to continue to drive the transformation that’s already underway within Melbourne’s public transport sector.

“I hope to lead, educate and inspire the building industry to investigate how it creates social value, and implement programs that create real change for people and places.”
