A graduate from the University of Newcastle received the state’s most prestigious honour at the 2017 NSW Graduate and Student Architecture Awards, announced earlier this month.

Announced at a ceremony held in Sydney, James Ellis took home the NSW Design Medal for his project ‘The Plant’, an investigation into where food, cities and architecture intersect.

“[The Plant is] an insightful solution to a very complex brief that explores an entirely new building typology, the Community Food Factory, [which is] an activist response to the way that modern food production has become disconnected and made invisible from modern society,” said the jury.

Brendan Boyle, also a graduate of The University of Newcastle, was named runner-up for the medal for his project, ‘Re:Birth’. The project explores the artefacts at Catherine Hill Bay, and proposes the reincarnation of industrial artefact through architectural intervention.

Two commendations were also awarded – the first to James Hargrave of the University of New South Wales for his project ‘Space // Between’, and the second to Boris Nikolov, Pareena Patel and Jennifer Strilakos, graduates of the University of Technology Sydney (UTS), for their project ‘Foreshore Re-appropriate Organisation’.

Intended as an annual celebration of up-and-coming young architects, the NSW Graduate and Student Architecture Awards seeks out the best from four architecture programs throughout the state: the University of Newcastle, the University of Sydney, University of New South Wales and UTS.
