The tallest crane in Florida was called upon recently to install six 4kW wind turbines on the rooftop of the Hilton Fort Lauderdale Beach Resort.

Manufactured by Urban Green Energy (UGE), the turbines are expected to produce 10 percent of the hotel’s electricity, giving power to lighting in 372 guestrooms and public areas.

It is predicted the $500 000 investment in the system will be returned to the hotel in less than 10 years.

The turbines form part of a larger green program at the resort, which includes a wind-powered rooftop lounge currently in the design stage and a food waste decomposition system.

Also being considered by the hotel management is the renewable energy supply boost that could come from the installation of photovoltaics, as well as an electric vehicle charging station.
