A proposal by Dutch design practice MVRDV to build a giant mirrored public art depot in Rotterdam’s Museumpark, has taken out the city’s Collection Building competition.

MVRDV’s 15,000 square metre design features a cyclindrical structure clad in reflective glass which mirrors the green landscape of the surrounding park.

Inside, the gallery’s interior expands with each of the three floors, allowing visitors to pass through various art exhibitions and restoration workshops as they make their way up to rooftop exhibitions, sculpture garden and restaurant.

Rotating storage racks will allow the art exhibitions to be changed frequently, while seven specific climatic zones will provide ideal conditions for art storage and restoration.

The 50 million euro project is also being deigned to reach BREEAM Excellent environmental certification upon its expected completion in 2017.
