Architectural projects from five Melbourne practices have been selected to go on show in South Korea’s exhibition Architectural Urbanism: Melbourne/Seoul.

Opening 28 March at the K-ARTS Gallery, Korean National University of the Arts, Seoul, South Korea, it includes input from Muir Mendes, Baracco + Wright, Iredale Pedersen Hook, NMBW Architecture Studio and Kerstin Thompson Architecture.

Their works explore urbanism as it address the context of the city through small architectural projects that weave the old and new and explores the dynamics that evolve from subtle and careful manipulation of the city in detail.

The exhibiting Melbourne practices all have strong links to RMIT University’s School of Architecture and Design.

Design for City of Perth Information Centre by Iredale Pederson Hook.

The exhibition’s curator is RMIT Associate Professor Melanie Dodd.

Dodd commented: “The exhibition explores commonality in the apparently different contexts of both cities – speculating on these as forms of ‘architectural urbanism’ in the contemporary city of the Asia-Pacific at its northern and southern extremes.”

Held in conjunction with the Korean National University of Arts, there will be a symposium with presentations from four of the Melbourne architects.

The exhibition is supported by the Australian Government through the Australia International Cultural Council: an initiative of the Department of Foreign Affairs and Trade. It will be opened by the Deputy Australian Ambassador in Seoul.
