A unique apartment project has received the Judges Commendation at the
Master Builders Excellence in Building Awards held recently at the National
Convention Centre.
The Canberra family project, One of a Kind Apartments received the recognition
in the category of ‘Apartments and Units up to 3 Storeys’. The quirky double storeyed
complex of seven apartments located on a shady street in Dickson in Canberra’s
Inner North, uses a holistic approach to design incorporating recycled and
re-purposed materials.
Designer and developer of ‘One of a Kind Apartments’, Stuart Forsyth said
the project has from the beginning, been a complex collaboration of artists,
designers and tradespeople, while maintaining environment and
neighbourhood-friendly construction.
Old recycled materials have been used throughout the building. For
instance, old recycled corrugated iron, some dating back to the 1860s, has been
used as upper floor cladding and in courtyard walls.
The communal foyer aims to deliver a special experience and has been designed
as an art gallery of re-purposed materials including tools left behind by
steel-fixers, 19th century spirit levels and spanners.
The apartment complex is currently operating as short and long stay
serviced apartments. To ensure their guests have a unique experience during
their stay, each apartment is creatively styled using repurposed estate
furniture and accented with a different colour of the rainbow, each celebrating
one of the world’s creative cities.
