RMIT Associate Degree of Design (furniture) students, in conjunction with the Salvation Army, recently created a range of economical and ergonomic furniture for some of Melbourne’s most disadvantaged.

Students were given a brief to design furniture appropriate to the needs of the Salvation Army’s community housing throughout greater Melbourne.

"Working directly with a client brief and a manufacturer was a fantastic opportunity for the students," says Mette Stryhn, a teacher in RMIT’s School of Design (TAFE).

The selected designs were manufactured by Creative Opportunities, a branch of the Salvation Army, which provides supported employment and training for people with minor disabilities.

The manufactured furniture designs were recently exhibited at Furnitex 2010.
