peckvonhartel’s winning design of the new Charles Darwin Centre at 19 The Mall, Darwin NT

The company says the $84 million building, to be known as “the Charles Darwin Centre”, is designed to provide commercial office, retail and recreational space that will offer exceptional views to the picturesque Darwin Harbour.

James Paspaley, Executive Director of Paspaley, praised the winning design for its innovation, green initiatives and the way the existing heritage façades have been sympathetically incorporated within the new building design.

Northern Territory Government Chief Minister Paul Henderson further praised that the historic façade would be maintained “keeping an important part of Darwin’s history alive while looking into the future with a state of the art green building.”

Mark Jagla, Paspaley’s General Manager for Properties added “the design was a key component to Paspaley being selected as the preferred tenderer. The building will further enhance the redeveloped Smith Street Mall and will be a significant addition to the City of Darwin”.

Both Paspaley Pearls Properties and peckvonhartel have made a commitment to develop and deliver the building to achieve a 5 star NABERS Green Rating.

The project will support approximately 100 construction jobs, including 12 apprentices, and further jobs on completion. Construction is scheduled to start at the end of 2012 and will be completed in 2015.

Marten Peck, Principal of peckvonhartel commented “we are excited to be part of this exceptional project. The design impetus is to provide an innovative building that is truly outstanding, both for the Northern Territory Government tenant and for the benefit of the Darwin community as a whole”.
