A new sustainable design initiative, the 10 Star Energy Challenge, is being launched today by the Building Designers Association of Victoria (BDAV).

The competition will see Victorian designers competing to submit the best 10 star energy rated home design.

10 star houses require no heating or cooling, and according to the BDAV even result in negative power bills where the utility company owes the householder money.

The association says it is a timely initiative. An announcement to media said: “These houses are better for the environment — they result in lower greenhouse gas emissions, and given the prospect of rising energy prices (and now a carbon tax), they will save the householder over the long term.”

The competition coincides with the introduction of mandatory 6 star energy ratings for new Victorian houses or major renovations from May.
