A new hybrid casino-convention complex in Atlantic City aims to turn around a tired genre, and a city. The new Revel merges several markets under one roof, including hotel resort, casino, theaters, and convention space. The $2.4 billion project designed by Arquitectonica, was worked on by 65 interior design firms to provide an array of finishes, from polished chrome columns to a 100-foot gold-flecked mobile.

A new project by Andrew Burns Architect hasbeen unveiled in Echigo Tsumari, Niigata Prefecture, Japan. The modesttriangular form is a replacement for the original gallery and residential spaceAustralia House, which was destroyed during one of the aftershocks that shookJapan in March 2011. Designed as a hybrid space for Australian architects to residewhilst undertaking collaborative creative projects with Japanese designprofessionals, the sharp form encompasses both dynamic display space andresidential units.

Tianjin, China
The new Tianjin West Railway Station hasbeen designed by Gerkan, Marg and Partners to serve as a stop on the high-speedline between Beijing and Shanghai, as well as linking regional lines to theunderground network. The architects have highlighted the linking ‘bridge’function between the city quarters with a 57 meter high and nearly 400 meterlong barrel vault roof above the terminal concourse.

PENSON have completed their design for thenew Google London headquarters located in the Renzo Piano-designed Central St.Giles Building in Covent Garden, after being appointed in May to carry out theconcept. The design is a nod to all things British, featuring Union Jack flags,allotments where staff can grow vegetables, old-fashioned communal ‘living’rooms complete with rocking-chairs, outdoor work spaces named the ‘SecretGarden’, and a 200-person event room named the ‘Town Hall’.

With 100 energy-efficient homes and a closed-loopagricultural system that provides not only food for its residents but a surplusfor them to sell, the project architects believe the village could be a modelfor villages around the world.
