A groundbreaking ceremony has been held as construction commenced on the first phase of the $2.5bn Terminal 2 at Incheon International Airport. The HMGY (Heerim-Mooyoung-Gensler-Yungdo) Consortium designed the second terminal with the wider scheme also incorporating a second airport control tower, a train station, parking facilities and an airside Intra Airport Transit (IAT).

Tokyo, Japan

A group of Japanese architects headed by Fumihiko Maki have joined forces to rally against Zaha Hadid’s forthcoming 2020 Olympic Stadium in Tokyo. Along with Toyo Ito, Sou Fujimoto, Kengo Kuma and Riken Yamamoto, the 2003 Pritzker Prize winner is making a plea for adjustments to the 80,000 seat stadium design, which he believe is far too large for its surroundings.

Cupertino, United States

Apple has unveiled the scale model of the Foster+Partners designed ring shaped Apple Headquarters in Cupertino. The design has been approved approved by the city planning commission, although the final decision won't be made until November 2013. The $5 billion building, which Apple calls “the best office building in the world,” is slated for completion in 2016.

Istanbul, Turkey

Oslo-based architecture firm Nordic Office of Architecture, in partnership with Grimshaw, has won the right to design the world’s largest airport terminal in Istanbul. The Norwegian team will help develop the 8,000-hectare airport located on the Black Sea coast, some 35 km outside the Turkish capital.

Google X, the company's secret development unit, has reportedly developed a new technology that could transform the construction industry. It goes by the name of “Genie.” A report addressed to Google co-founders Sergey Brin and Larry Page, describes the invention as a cloud-based collaboration platform with “planning applications to help architects and engineers in the design process, especially for skyscrapers and large buildings.”
