Chengdu, China

The largest man-made structure in the world has opened in China's Sichuan province. The New Century Global Centre in Chengdu is 500 metres long, 400 metres wide and stands 100 metres high. The building’s 1.7 million square-metre interior includes hotels, offices, a beach resort and an artificial sun.

The World Architecture Festival (WAF) Awards has released its 2013 shortlist. Taking place this year at the sixth annual World Architecture Festival in Singapore between October 2-4, the WAF Awards 2013 have attracted entries from almost 50 countries including a pleated theatre in China, a giraffe house in New Zealand, a research station in Antarctica and a whirlpool-shaped aquarium in Denmark.

A building on the Thames that has been home to London's Design Museum for 24 years has been sold to Zaha Hadid's architecture practice in a real estate deal worth £10 million. Hadid reportedly plans to use the building as an archive and exhibition space for her studio’s architecture.

Istabul, Turkey

Earlier this week a Turkish court ruled against the Prime Minister Tayyip Erdogan-backed development, which proposed to redesign Istanbul’s iconic Taksim Square and replace one of the populated city’s few public parks with a mall. Although authorities are expected to appeal the ruling, this news marks a significant victory for those who opposed the project.

Stuttgart, Germany

Danish architecture firm 3XN has won first prize in an invitation-only competition with its vision to create an open social learning environment for a new technical faculty at the German university Duale Hochschule Baden-Württemberg (DHBW). The win follows the recent inauguration of another 3XN designed building - the head office of the United Nations in Copenhagen.
