TDA Interiors has completed work on the $1.5 million fit out of the new Australian Broadcasting Corporation (ABC) station in Wollongong.

The fit out was a new direction for ABC with Interiors Australia designing a modern, bright colour scheme with bold graphics. Angled and asymmetric interior design challenged TDA Interiors and pushed the boundaries of a fit out with the implementation of unusual methods to fit out the glass panelling and walls.

“The fit out was a lot of fun because it wasn’t four walls and a roof, it had triangular glass panels that needed to interlock as well as lots of round walls and surfaces,” said Andrew Holder, managing director of TDA Interiors.

The 450 sqm fit out spanned two floors and comprised a full revamp of the internal building as well as some external refurbishment, the construction of two broadcast stations complete with soundproof walls, a new lift, open plan office areas, a roof platform to house all satellite equipment and a diesel generator.

“ABC is designed to withstand natural disasters allowing it to operate and broadcast during times of crisis like the Brisbane Floods. The diesel generator will work when electricity substations won’t,” said Holder.

TDA used an Autex Acoustic Panel system to construct floating walls in the broadcast studios creating a sound proof environment.

By internalising the existing balconies on the building, TDA was able to significantly increase the net lettable area of the building and make a substantial improvement to the office space.
