The WA State Government has fast-tracked a major housing development by three years to provide affordable homes for people in Perth’s north-east corridor.

The joint venture between the Department of Housing and Brookfield Residential Properties will see 225.7ha of land at Henley Brook developed into 2,650 lots.

Housing Minister Bill Marmion says the Whiteman Edge development will address the strong demand for affordable housing in the north-east corridor.

“A number of lots in the development will be priced within the reach of low to moderate income earners, allowing them to get a foot on the property ladder,” he says.

“The Government has set the goal of producing 20,000 dwellings by 2020 that are affordable, appropriate and available, and the release of land in this development will go some way to achieving this.”

The first 94 lots have already commenced development and are expected to go on sale before the end of 2010.

At Whiteman Edge 22ha of the development is devoted to shared community recreational facilities, along with a neighbourhood shopping centre and planned schools. The site is 17km north-east of the Perth CBD and is opposite Whiteman Park
