Quicksmart Homes claims it has delivered Australia’s first modular healthcare building after completing the Lake Macquarie Private Hospital expansion.

The company has completed a 31 bed orthopaedic and surgical ward extension of the Lake Macquarie Private Hospital.

The extension used modular technology and the project was completed cost effectively and within a shorter time frame than traditional building methods.

Rufus Harding, managing director of Quicksmart Homes said Lake Macquarie’s extension using Quicksmart’s technology was the first of its kind in a hospital in Australia and had therefore sparked enormous interest in the healthcare sector both in Australia and overseas.

“The hospital modules are the first of their kind,” Harding said. “We are very happy with the results at Lake Macquarie Private Hospital and believe that this example paves the way for other hospitals to use this technology in their building projects.”

He said more than 70 per cent of the products that make up the modules are made or owned by Australian companies.

The Lake Macquarie Private Hospital expansion is an L-shaped extension of the first floor connecting into the existing hospital wards.

Akalan Projects, the construction manager for the project, delivered a supporting steel frame which was designed to ensure minimal loss of parking, the Quicksmart modules were delivered to the site complete with bathrooms finished to the Australian Health Facility Guideline standards, including all fixtures, fittings, infection-reduction tiled flooring, wall tiles and medical gas facilities. Once on site, a nurse’s station, clean utility room, store room and patient lounge were added by Akalan Projects to the 31 substantially completed patient room modules.

“The Lake Macquarie Private Hospital project proved that the use of modules with medical grade fit outs can deliver outstanding value to healthcare customers,” Harding said. “More importantly for Ramsay Health Care was the reduction in on-site disruption for patient, staff and visitors.”

“This project has sparked huge interest amongst the healthcare sectors both here and overseas as sites that were previously locked out due to high construction costs and long timescales. These can now be reviewed for action thereby potentially providing more beds and facilities for patients very quickly and economically. We’re delighted that our client is now looking to roll out expansion plans in other healthcare sites using our Quicksmart medical-grade modular technology.”
