A recent audit of around 1500 building contractors throughout Queensland by the Building Services Authority has found only 14 suspected unlicensed contractors.

More than 100 officers from the BSA have visited building sites statewide in recent weeks.

Public Works Minister Robert Schwarten announced that the BSA had visited randomly selected residential and commerical construction sites from Thursday Island to the Gold Coast to check that building contractors are properly licensed.

“These audits help to ensure contractors do the right thing, standards are maintained and consumers are protected,“, he says.

“Although the audit is continuing these results show the huge majority of contractors are doing the right thing and have the correct licence.

“As I've said before, I'm extremely pleased that as the number of compliance investigations by the BSA has increased, the number of unlicensed contractors detected has decreased.”

Mr Schwarten said BSA officers would continue to interview contractors around the State and he reminded all contractors that their licence could be the next one that is checked.

In 2009-10, BSA staff interviewed 9,594 contractors at 2,604 building sites. As a result, fines totalling $88,000 were issued and 38 investigations are ongoing.
