Describe the product — how does it work? What applications can it be used in?

The backbone of any great floor system, the Hyne I-Beam, is now available in both 70mm and 90mm flange widths, effectively doubling the Hyne I-Beam range. The demand in the market has been for a more economical I-Beam option that is just as easy to use. The new 70mm Hyne I-Beam still provides design flexibility without compromising the quality and benefits that Hyne I-Beam has become known for.

Hyne I-Beam is a unique combination of timber components and advanced technology that comes together to form a structurally efficient “I” section that is particularly suitable for use as floor joists, but can also be used for rafters, lintels, purlins and girts.

What is the product made of?

The flanges made from quality Hyne solid structural softwood and the webbing is Hyne OS’Brace®, an engineered, three layered flat-pressed OSB panel of oriented strands (micro-veneers) bonded with synthetic resin.

All Hyne I-Beams come treated to H2F for use south of the Tropic of Capricorn. Hyne I-Beam can also be treated to H2 for use above the tropic of Capricorn. The H2 treatment is combined with the webbing glue providing protection to the whole board.

Hyne I-Beam can even be treated to H3 for use in high moisture areas. However, Hyne does not recommend that Hyne I-Beam be used in fully weather exposed applications.

Will the treatment corrode metal fittings or fasteners?

As the preservative formulation is non-corrosive, normal steel nails and plates are suitable for use as fixings. Once dry the preservative will not affect nail or plate holding capacity.

How is the product installed? Does it have any special installation requirements?

Hyne I-Beams are lightweight, yet strong, making them easy to install and saving on construction time while simultaneously producing floors that are more uniform, more rigid and that don’t “bounce”. They are less than half the weight of traditional timber joists yet stronger, with increased spanability.

Is the product environmentally friendly? If so, how?

Timber products are the most eco-friendly construction material as they

use the only truly renewable resource. Across its life cycle, a plantation pine timber product is also an important carbon sink. Both the flange and the webbing of Hyne I-Beam are manufactured using plantation softwood from sustainably managed forests.
