Q: Describe the product — how does it work? What applications can it be used in?

A: Scyon™ Secura™ wet area flooring is an internal wet area structural flooring substrate for tile finishes over timber or lightweight steel floor joists. Simple and fast to install, it helps gives peace of mind against moisture damage to internal wet area floors. It is a smarter alternative to particleboard, plywood or compressed fibre cement.

Q: What is the product made of (materials)?

A: Secura™ wet area flooring is made from Scyon™, an advanced lightweight, heavy-duty cement composite.

Q: How does it make life easier for the builder?

A: In a nut shell, Scyon™ Secura™ wet area flooring combines installation efficiencies and effectiveness in helping to protect against moisture damage1.

Secura™ wet area flooring is 20 per cent lighter per sqm than conventional 15 mm compressed fibre cement, which makes it easier to handle, cut and nail. The 19 mm tongue and groove jointing means it’s compatible with other 19 mm flooring products and eliminates the need for timber trimmers along the tongue and groove joint.

Secura™ wet area flooring’s moisture- resistant sealer, combined with the moisture-resistant properties of the Scyon™ material, remove the need for full floor waterproofing outside the enclosed shower recess. Conveniently, it can be installed up to three months before the roof goes on a project and will continue to perform, even if it gets wet2.

It can help give peace of mind and protection when it comes to moisture build-up and damage that are common to wet areas. Who wants to return to a job to carry out rectifications due to moisture damage? Not only is it costly — the industry puts a bathroom rectification at around $12,000 to $15,000 on average — but it’s time consuming and unplanned for.

Q: Is the product environmentally friendly? If so, how?

A: Scyon™ Secura™ wet area flooring is made from a combination of cement, ground sand and fibre and provides a product that offers flexural strength and durability, and is resistant to damage from moisture, termites, rot and fire — all properties that are desirable to the building industry.

In addition, it is low in embodied energy relative to many other building products like masonry and concrete — that’s the energy consumed by all of the processes associated with the production of a product.

Q: What’s the impact of construction that uses Scyon™ products?

A: Another key factor to the surprisingly low environmental impact of the product is the extraordinary speed and efficiency with which it can be installed and incorporated into practical building systems that touch the earth lightly.

Q: What’s the impact of using Scyon™ products over the life of a building?

A: One of the hidden factors that determine the true impact of a product is its service life. Scyon™ products are very durable and require very little maintenance, which helps create buildings low in lifetime energy.

Q: What’s the impact on people living and working in buildings made from Scyon™ products?

A: Used in the right design, Scyon™ products can be used to create energy efficient and thermally comfortable buildings in any Australian climate.

All Scyon™ products are low in volatile organic compounds (VOCs) and low in embodied energy relative to many other building products like masonry and concrete.
