Australia’s greenest homes will open their doors to the public for the ninth annual Sustainable House Day on Sunday, September 12, showcasing the country’s most environmentally sustainable and innovative homes that invest in renewable energy, recycling and other practices designed to reduce their carbon footprint.

"More and more savvy homeowners are realising the benefits of investing in sustainable living technology in their homes which not only presents energy savings but financial savings too," says event organiser Judy Celmins.

The Association for Building Sustainability Assessors (ABSA) will provide sustainability assessors at many of the open homes.

A range of purpose-built sustainable display homes and private homes featuring a variety of sustainable features and ideas will open for the 2010 event.

The houses will give visitors opportunities to see firsthand the benefits such as solar, ventilation, water harvesting and recycling, shading, thermal mass, glazing and window treatments.

"Nine out of 10 visitors to last year’s event said it had increased their likelihood of using sustainable practices in their own homes — an outstanding result which shows Sustainable House Day is making a tangible difference in the fight to reduce the population’s drain on our resources," Celmins says.
