Cox Rayner Architects has claimed first prize, and $20,000, at the 2009 Boral Design Awards for its 'Jacaranda House' in Brisbane.

The fourth annual conceptual design awards for architects, building designers and architectural students were held at Circa in Melbourne on 25 November.

The awards encourage innovative yet realistic concepts in residential design, with this year's brief being the design of a 150 sqm family home and its landscape, including detailing that responded to specific challenges of the site.

Exploration of the courtyard house model characterised the majority of submissions this year, with Jacaranda House representing the most successful of these explorations.

Designed by Paul Focic and Jeremy Marsden, the jury said that "Jacaranda House represents the most creative application of materials within a building that responds to climate, topography and orientation, to create maximum comfort and delight for its inhabitants."

Second place was awarded to Shane Plazibat, Tony Jemmott, Vincent Teo and Jindrich Hozak from Plazibat + Jemmott Architects in Brisbane, and the $4,000 student category winner was Lachlan Joseph from the Queensland University of Technology.
