CSIRO fire scientists last week tried to burn down Joost Bakker-designed eco-friendly house made of straw to see how it stands up to the heat, testing it as a building option for bushfire-prone areas.

The house is made with Modak board cladding, a steel frame and walls insulated with straw. They exposed it to a worst case bushfire scenario.

The structure is made using a building system created by Joost Bakker, and it may provide an environmentally friendly building option for bushfire-prone areas.

The affectionately named “straw house” was blasted with a range of real life bushfire conditions, from a radiation build up phase to full flame immersion and then a radiation decay phase
