CSR Roofing, under the guidance of Jones Sonter Architects and Adco Constructions, has renovated the grand entrance of the Great Hall & Aquatic Centre at Knox Grammar School using Wunderlich Nullarbor tiles.

Development undertaken within the school grounds needed to reflect Knox Grammar’s architectural heritage, a key consideration adopted by Jones Sonter Architects.

Gonzalo Gonzalez, head architect on the project describes the campus architectural style as 14th century Scottish Baronial, a look that is renowned for the use of turreted bartisans, crenulations, oriels, steeply pitched roofs and large slabs of hewn stone.

The challenge for the architects was to integrate this architectural style into a modern commercial structure that would house a multipurpose 2,500 seat auditorium, 50 metre competition swimming pool, purpose built "Learn to Swim" pool and a weights room/gymnasium.

The solution was to merge the expansive auditorium and pool area to a 'Grand Entrance Foyer & Portico.'

One of the key elements that provided this link was the imposing roofline that covered the entire entrance foyer, an area of over 430 square metres. This roof, pitched at 44 degrees balances above the glass, brick and sandstone façade.

Building contractor ADCO engaged CSR Roofing's construction division to coordinate the installation. Almost 6,000 Wunderlich Nullarbor slate gray tiles were laid in 3 days, as well as 'insulation batts' and 'sarking underlay.' Additionally, every tile was 'storm clipped'.

The Great Hall and Aquatic Centre was completed in September 2011.
