The City of Sydney has greenlighted a new multi-storey mixed use development at an ‘island’ site located on Flinders Street in Surry Hills.

The $60-million project by developer Avid Property Group will turn a currently disused plot at an important entry corridor to Sydney into a new six-storey residential and retail building offering 28 terrace-style homes and boutique apartments, ground floor retail spaces and four street frontages.

Formerly a petrol station, the 990-square-metre site was acquired by Avid in 2016 for $14.8 million. The terrace housing style will be adopted in the building’s design to respect the neighbourhood’s heritage roots.

To address the design challenges of the narrow site, Scott Carver Architects will combine the terrace-style residences with distinct retail, community and public spaces. The development is expected to be completed by 2020.

Being their first apartment project in Sydney, Avid expects the development to create some traction for the company in the Sydney market; the project is also aligned with their growth strategy to achieve $1 billion in business value over the next five years.
