CORIUM brick cladding system was specified for the Belmont House redevelopment project in Uxbridge, UK to help modernise the old building’s façade. The £30-million refurbishment of Belmont House was helmed by architects TP Bennett for their client Aviva to provide more than 125,000sqft of office space over five storeys.

The existing 1980s office block façade of Belmont House was stripped back to the original concrete frame to facilitate the modernisation and provide a fresh and efficient first-class office building. The building’s central core area was completely demolished and the existing concrete frame was strengthened to allow the addition of a fifth floor at the roof level, as well as two terraces, a full height atrium, and a brand new entrance on Belmont Road.

TP Bennett Director David Blair sought a suitable façade for this premium development. According to David, the original design called for traditional brick but they didn’t want the building to look overly uniform. The architects finalised on a blend that would give the façade a ‘multi’ type characteristic.

Describing his initial experience with CORIUM on site, Project Director Peter Denness of main contractors McLaren Construction said the material was a joy to work with, thanks to its easy fixing and flexibility during the build.

TP Bennett Director David Blair observes that the brick cladding has rebranded the building and given it a new lease of life. There were a number of complex details and interfaces between the existing and new structures that were overcome in design through close co-operation between all stakeholders, leading to an impressive outcome that has met all expectations.

Peter Denness concludes that the new Belmont House really makes a significant contribution to the regeneration of Uxbridge town centre.
