Several products from Kingspan Insulated Panels were specified for the walls and roof of the Western Australian Institute of Sport building in Mount Claremont, Perth.

A first-class training facility designed to help Western Australia's elite athletes reach peak performance in the lead up to major national and international sporting events, the Western Australian Institute of Sport (WAIS) features Kingspan’s Benchmark Evolution Axis insulated panels on the exterior walls and trapezoidal roof panels on the roof. Kingspan’s top hats as well as membrane lined insulated gutters, suitable for both boundary wall and valley gutter applications were also used in the project.

Façade

Kingspan’s insulated panel and façade system was used to create a contemporary, dynamic façade for the WAIS facility in Perth. Four colours from the Evolution Axis panels range were specified for the building’s side façade.

The combination of earthy and metallic coloured Kingspan panels created subtle variations in texture and character to lift the façade. This final outcome provides a more contemporary edge to the surrounding site, which is characterised by parchment blockwork from the eighties, big gum trees and grassy sports ovals.

The façade system brings the training facility’s award-winning, linear design to life using strong, streamlined materials that mirror the physiological elements and performance of the elite athlete’s body.

“’We specified Kingspan panels for the Institute’s dramatic exterior walling. The single panels allowed us to bring the design to life with fewer joints for a more streamlined finish," said Michael Chamberlain, Sandover Pinder.

Roofing

Conventional roofing materials require an additional soffit or ceiling treatment but Kingspan’s trapezoidal roof panels are finished on both sides, allowing their use as a roofing material as well as in an internal ceiling application while meeting both thermal performance and aesthetic requirements.

“The roofing material was a particularly important consideration for this project, particularly over the aquatics area where issues can arise due to the humid and corrosive environment,” said Chamberlain.

Since the panels were manufactured offsite, installation was relatively quick, allowing the project timeline to be achieved and enabling other trades to access the building sooner.
