Once a utilitarian stone grain store within a broader constellation of agricultural outbuildings, the structure has been reimagined with a sensitivity that elevates its tactile heritage.

The project’s material strategy embraces the grain store’s original heft and texture: stone walls are retained with only the lightest touch of repair, while new insertions are deliberately restrained, allowing the expressive weight of the existing fabric to resonate. Minimal finishes underscore this respect for the building’s agricultural origins.

Two organising axes, one a central spine and a processional entry rout, provide a clear spatial logic. A pre-existing level change, rather than being concealed, is dramatically leveraged to choreograph the arrival sequence and to unfold a range of spatial atmospheres.

Within the expansive volume of the former grain store, a series of compact interior “capsules” appears as finely lined boxes nested inside the larger envelope. These rooms diverge from the rugged exterior context, offering moments of colour, form, and texture that act as intimate counterpoints to the broader landscape. Their concentrated character offers episodic moments of surprise and delight.

A deliberately low-reflectance palette serves as a foil to the intense brightness outside, drawing the eye outward while mitigating glare. Lighting selections continue this richly textured material language: illumination is kept low and warm, tempering the peaks of summer brightness, and providing comfort in cooler months.

The darker interior tones heighten the drama of external views, creating a contemplative spaciousness and intensifying one’s awareness of the surrounding environment.

Intervention in the historic fabric was purposefully minimal. A single, new opening stitches the grain store to its annex and verandah, the only act of demolition in a project guided by principles of adaptation and accretion.

Existing openings were preserved and celebrated; their happenstance framings of the landscape offer subtle, serendipitous vistas. New infill across both the original store and the lean-to takes the form of timber cladding, maintaining material consistency and modesty.

The design team embraced the challenge of working within significant constraints, finding that such limitations often spark more inventive architectural responses. Reuse was fundamental: farm-sourced materials like timber panelling, brass handrails, galvanized pipe balustrades, and stone were reincorporated into the project.

Rocks gathered from the property were repurposed for masonry repairs, grounding the building physically and poetically in its site.

Biophilic principles shaped the project throughout, expressed through natural materials, low- or no-finish surfaces, and a constant dialogue with the surrounding landscape.

Comfort and amenity are heightened not through excess, but through connection, designed to bring the occupants into closer alignment with the rhythms, textures, and quiet grandeur of the site.

According to the owners, "Our architects provided a masterplan solution to a complex and problematic site, delivering an outcome that was bespoke and befitting to its rural environment. Their sensitive observance of re-purposing the dilapidated ruins has resulted in a central, connective hub for our agricultural team and community. Its multi-purpose nature provides scope for large scale functions or intimate gatherings, all with layered details, joyful discoveries, and insightful offerings. Their design honours its humble past but encourages a new future. Our architect’s attention to detail and perseverance to cause is showcased in this project."
