A Mediterranean home in Australia. This is the concept behind the new design by award-winning Liz Maxwell from Stage Avenue Interior Design. “The ‘Casa del Sol’ residence combines elements of Spanish and Mediterranean architecture to create a warm and welcoming atmosphere reminiscent of the sunny coastal regions of that sea,” she explains.

To capture her inspiration, Maxwell used wooden floors and beams, brick arches, and light, neutral colours such as Dekton Sabbia, used for the splashback, worktop, and kitchen island. “I chose Dekton Sabbia for its beautiful earthy warmth and texture, as well as the natural travertine pattern running through the slabs, which complements my Mediterranean/Spanish theme,” the professional notes.

Dekton Zenith for a ‘whitewashed’ look

Beyond this nuanced reinterpretation of classic Italian marble, the interior designer partnered with Dekton Zenith for the bathrooms and worktops in other moist areas, such as the laundry room. This pristine white with a clean, matte finish, reminiscent of the whitewashed villages of Andalusia, is also featured on the worktop of the small, cosy bar located between the living room and the kitchen.

“Dekton is a durable and resistant surface for both worktops and splashbacks in the kitchen and laundry room. Additionally, it features minimalist lines, perfect for vertical applications, which allow the splashback to blend seamlessly with the worktop, giving the kitchen a simple and uniform look,” Maxwell explains. The interior designer also considers the material's narrow joints an advantage, as they enhance both its aesthetics and hygiene.

A style that is both contemporary and timeless

The design of ‘Casa del Sol’ is completed with white walls that reflect sunlight, natural fabrics in warm tones, and large windows and doors offering beautiful views of the garden, inspired by lush green Mediterranean courtyards. “I try to steer away from trends that quickly go out of style. I really love natural light, textures, fluid and cohesive elements, as well as timeless features, which I combine with a contemporary and modern aesthetic,” Maxwell shares.

The professional has also added wrought iron details to the house to “bring a touch of old-world charm”. Thanks to all these elements, Maxwell has successfully united the essence of two coasts that are far apart yet equally sunlit.
