The Cairns Regional Council has okayed Cox Rayner's Development Application (DA) for a new performing arts centre to be built on the site of the old Civic Theatre.

The application for the construction of the Cairns Performing Arts Centre was assessed against the relevant planning and development frameworks and statutory requirements, with the Council determining that the DA complied with planning requirements and reflected the intentions of the draft Planning Scheme.

The proposed Cairns Performing Arts Centre will comprise of a 941-seat main theatre, 400-seat studio theatre, fly tower, dressing rooms, foyer, bar and amenities. The plan also includes provision for 158 on-site car parking spaces.
