Janet Holmes à Court has today been announced as the commissioner of architecture’s biggest international events.

Janet Holmes à Court will manage the Australian Pavilion at the 2010 Venice Architecture Biennale, regarded as one of the most important events on the international contemporary architecture calendar, despite not having an architectural background herself.

“Australia has a great wealth of architectural talent that is often overlooked,” Holmes à Court said. “Anything I can do to draw attention to the creativity of the best Australian architects will be a joy and a privilege.”

The event brings together thousands of the world’s most influential architects, designers, urban planners and critics together to showcase and discuss trends and innovations in the architectural realm.

Holmes à Court was recently awarded The Woodrow Wilson Corporate Citizenship Award for her commitment to the global community through the arts, health and education and is currently chairman of the Urban Design Centre of WA.

Australian Institute of Architects National President Melinda Dodson said Holmes holds the ability and leadership to attract strong support and attention to Australia’s presence at the event.

“This event puts Australian architecture on a global scale and provides unparalleled exposure for Australian architects on the world stage,” Dodson said.

“It is vital we have strong leadership to maximise our opportunities and ensure the world is watching.”

The Australian Institute of Architects is now calling for expressions of interest for Creative Director for the 2010 Biennale, with submissions to close on Friday 17 July.
