Built in 1873, the interiors of the terrace – historically known as Wellpark House – have been transformed into a Parisian-inspired space that balances depth, craftsmanship and understated elegance. The property captures the character and material richness of a heritage home, paired with the performance, amenity and design integrity of a contemporary residence.

Wellpark House is the first standalone residence delivered by Orchard Piper, bringing the developer’s signature design-led approach to a new residential setting. The collaboration with Mim Design has restored and embraced the terrace’s Victorian character, while applying a sensitive contemporary update to create a European-inspired atmosphere.

Reinstated heritage details have been a focal point of the three-bedroom, three-bathroom renovation, with the façade, grand 3.3 metre-high ceilings and original timber window frames honoured in the process.

Mim Design Founder and Principal, Miriam Fanning, said reflecting on the home’s evolution over more than 150 years, and its role in contemporary living, had informed the design approach.

“The legacy of the home reveals itself in the reinstated heritage details,” said Fanning.

“The addition of authentic materials including stone, timber floors, venetian plaster and bauwerk limewash paint have been paired alongside distinctive decorative features such as ceiling roses and moulded wall panels which reference the original home.”

Unfolding over four levels, the home is established by a grand foyer, reminiscent of Parisian entryways. On the ground floor, a study sits next to an impressive secondary bedroom with an attached walk-in robe and ensuite. Up the modest central staircase, the expansive first floor kitchen, living and dining spaces honour light, impressive proportions and indoor-outdoor connection, overlooking Fitzroy Gardens beyond the elegant French doors that connect to a sweeping terrace.

Hand-carved elements are articulated through the stonemasonry. Contours in the Rosana Marble fireplaces and powder rooms, and sculpted curves in the Lord White kitchen island and primary ensuite showcase the artisanal craftsmanship prioritised in the design. Aged-brass lighting from Henry Wilson and Dunlin are paired with bronze Spiggy hardware, echoing the heritage façade.

The primary bedroom spans the width of the whole top floor, oriented for premium garden views and morning sunlight. The ensuite is a true testament to the Victorian era, with handmade tiles, elegant nickel tapware and a freestanding bath as the centrepiece.

Below ground, a considered entertaining space unfolds, with cobblestone marble paving and arched doorways leading to a cellar with unique checkered tiles and a spacious rumpus room.

Maximising natural light within the strict heritage-protected, south-facing shell was integral to the spatial planning, ensuring rooms could access light through the original windows and offer privacy from the surrounding buildings.
