The final penthouse atop 1 Hotel & Homes Melbourne, Penthouse 1801 offers calm, expansive spaces for entertainment, work and retreat.

With architecture and interiors designed by renowned studio FK, and furniture and styling by One Design Office in collaboration with developer Riverlee, Penthouse 1801 is a highly resolved home. Its design embraces a thoughtful, sustainable and restrained approach, carrying through the wellness-centred philosophy of 1 Hotel.

The 680-square-metre penthouse occupies the eastern half of the waterfront hotel’s 18th level, offering sweeping views across Melbourne’s CBD and Port Philip Bay. Encompassing expansive open-plan spaces balanced by more intimate zones, the home is arranged to balance privacy and connection.

According to Nicky Drobis, Partner and Head of Design at FK, the penthouse design was a response to both the uncompromising standards of the luxury property market and the dynamic rhythm of contemporary life.

“There’s a lot happening in the world out there, and for a home to be a sanctuary, I think is more important than it’s ever been before,” he says.

“We wanted to create a home that feels warm and enveloping, with a natural flow between zones for unwinding, entertaining and working. It is about creating an effortless way of living, where everything has its place and the spaces unfold naturally against a stunning Melbourne skyline backdrop.”

The home unfolds towards the waterfront, with living spaces opening onto an expansive outdoor entertaining balcony that extends the interior into the sky. Oculi punctuate the main and secondary balconies, bringing light and sky into the composition and heightening the sense of elevation.

The home includes four bedrooms and five bathrooms, with the principal suite positioned towards the river including a generous walk-in wardrobe designed for two, and an ensuite conceived with the atmosphere of a private bathhouse.

The entertaining zone includes a curved cocktail lounge, wine room and scullery, creating a more intimate setting for hosting guests alongside the open-plan kitchen, dining and living spaces.

From the outside, FK’s architectural design of 1 Hotel & Homes responds to its waterfront setting, with the building’s undulating façade echoing the rippling surface of the Yarra.

A collection of artworks by Australian artists are on display throughout, curated around warm tonal palettes, raw materiality and a strong sense of the hand of the maker. Standouts include a jute wall hanging in the private office space by weaving artist Emma Shepard, and rich earthen-toned textile wall hangings by Zetta Kanta.

The adaptive reuse approach woven throughout 1 Hotel Melbourne, including the grand reception desk crafted from reclaimed timber, continues into the penthouse with statement pieces such as the wine room’s dining table by Melbourne Grown Timber, made from reclaimed timber sourced from Melbourne’s parks and gardens.

The design extends beyond the physical residence. As a hotel-branded home, Penthouse 1801 integrates with the five-star services and amenities of 1 Hotel & Homes Melbourne, giving residents the autonomy of a private residence with the convenience.
