Designed by Wardle, Monarch Residences occupies a culturally significant site on the Brisbane River. Set within an expansive garden landscape, the development embraces sweeping city views while placing the site’s natural and historic qualities at the heart of the design.

Two residential towers rise from the revitalised gardens, framing and celebrating the heritage-listed Middenbury House. Across the wider site, the landscape strategy re-establishes the connection between the river’s edge and the historic fig trees along Coronation Drive, creating a renewed sense of continuity and cohesion.

Monarch Residences is defined by its connection to the Brisbane River. Positioned right on the water’s edge, it offers a rare level of proximity to the river within a contemporary apartment setting. This relationship extends beyond the residences, shaping the arrival experience, communal areas and rooftop landscape.

The rooftop gardens are positioned to frame, rather than obstruct, the surrounding views. Informed by the river’s ecology and history, the architecture responds to its setting, creating a distinctive sense of place that sets Monarch Residences apart from other contemporary Brisbane apartment developments.

One of the project’s most effective design elements is the inclusion of Juliet balconies throughout the building. Modest in scale, they transform the experience of apartment living by creating a direct and tactile connection with the outdoors.

From the outset, the architects recognised that many of the buildings’ future residents would be local people seeking to remain connected to established communities while moving from larger family homes. This understanding shaped both the apartment planning and the broader lifestyle offered by the development.

Large entertaining areas and terraces, along with carefully considered communal amenities retain many of the qualities traditionally associated with suburban housing. The approach, in other words, responds to the Queensland preference for spacious homes while adapting those qualities to a contemporary residential setting.

The organic forms of the towers produce apartment layouts that are often irregular and highly individual. Rather than treating these geometries as limitations, the design team used integrated joinery to bring order, clarity and functionality to each space.

Monarch Residences’ extensive communal amenities are conceived not merely as lifestyle additions, but as extensions of the home. Rooftop lounges, dining rooms, shared kitchens, wellness spaces and landscaped terraces provide residents with opportunities to gather, entertain and participate in a connected community.
