Ventilation is achieved through stainless steel mesh concealed in the eaves, a strategy reminiscent of traditional farmhouses that allowed cavities to breathe.

A veranda-style awning wraps the north-western side of the house, tempering the coastal sun while creating a relaxed edge condition. Deep eaves provide further solar control, balancing shade and light across the interior.

Inside, the aesthetic continues seamlessly, hardwood is carried through as cladding and detailing, paired with polished concrete floors. The concrete serves not only as a robust surface but also as a source of thermal mass, regulating internal temperatures naturally.

The design balances tradition and innovation: while it borrows from the archetypal farmhouse language, it is finely tuned for a contemporary coastal life.

Playful and thoughtful details bring delight to daily living, from the glowing splashback and downdraft exhaust to the flush doors and a floating fireplace that anchors the living space.

Architecture & Design: Can you describe the initial vision for this project and how it evolved over time?

This was also a family home, set on the coast of Central Coast NSW. However, it was in the hills under the trees, as such it felt very rural in its placement. The design evolved with a rural aesthetic and practicality in mind.

What were the biggest challenges you faced during the design and construction phases, and how did you overcome them?

The hill was a challenge, doing clear and precise cut and fill to ensure the house can sit on a slab (good passive heat and cooling) was paramount.

The major challenge was the building facing mostly west (in summer - very hot). The mitigate this - we turned to our old farmhouse friends for inspiration. The idea of the awning was then introduced.

How did you ensure that the project met the client’s needs and expectations?

We would have consistent meetings, we used clear communication medias and 3D models.

Were there any unique or innovative techniques or materials used in this project?

The building has hidden stainless steel mesh to the eaves to ventilate the building wrap. One might argue there isn't any new or unique building technologies, in fact we used technologies known and technologies that should become a normal for every building.

The builders worked extremely hard to wrap, tape and seal all openings, frames and penetrations. Using mass (concrete and brick) on the base of the building is the key to releasing heat and cool when required.

How does this project fit into your broader portfolio and design philosophy?

It fits because it was right for the site and our clients. We don’t follow a style or seek trends, we really believe in the building's style being informed by itself, the users and the site. Adding colour, warmth and interest - just makes our buildings more joyful.
