Located in Herne Bay, a signature Auckland suburb on the southwestern shore of the Waitematā Harbour, Jervois Road is a five-level (and six residence) residential complex.

Designed by Monk Mackenzie, the building sits within an evolving retail frontage with expansive harbour views to the rear. The architecture adopts a singular, compact massing strategy, allowing the project to respond to both its urban frontage and broader coastal context.

“We were looking to create a façade as a carved, solid form, something that felt substantial within the streetscape,” says Hamish Monk, Director at Monk Mackenzie.

In line with this ambition, Monk and his team chose natural limestone bricks for the façade. Specified in an elongated format, their fine-grained texture draws on the grain patterning of neighbouring brickwork and timber weatherboards, and imbues the building with a calm, monolithic presence.

Applied across the façade as a continuous stone screen fixed to precast concrete panels, the bricks retain subtle tonal variation and a natural surface texture that shifts with the light. Their smaller scale also introduces a familiar residential rhythm, helping the five-storey building sit more comfortably within its predominantly low-rise context while maintaining a strong and enduring architectural presence.

Because the stone is applied as a lightweight facing system rather than laid as structural brick, the project avoided the need for extensive on-site bricklaying and scaffolding along the boundary, a method that would have been impractical given the scale and constraints of the site.

The bricks offer both consistency and variation, revealing texture and depth at closer range, while natural stone's durability and longevity provide a low-maintenance façade that will age well in a coastal environment while maintaining its character over time.

Presenting as a quiet yet deliberate expression of contemporary urban housing, Jervois Road Multi-Residential Project was recently announced as a winner of a 2026 Auckland Architecture Award.
