Serving the community of Gunnedah in north-central New South Wales, Gunnedah Hospital offers a range of medical treatments, including emergency care, inpatient services, and outpatient support.

Having recently undergone a major redevelopment, the hospital has overcome the various challenges it was facing – including ageing infrastructure, a lack of natural light, a poor layout that made wayfinding difficult, and a general disconnection room the local landscape and culture – and found a new lease of life.

Thanks to Richard Crookes Constructions and ARCH, the architectural practice responsible for the upgrade, it now functions as an effective, and contemporary, healing environment.

Completed in late 2025 and opened to the public in January 2026, the redevelopment includes the addition of an acute services building which connects with the existing hospital buildings; an expanded emergency department; new ambulance bays; a new birthing, maternity and inpatient unit; a new main entry and reception area, and the addition of new landscaping.

Thanks to these changes, the hospital is able to offer best practice models of care, and provide patients, families and carers with a reason to believe they will continue to have all their needs met, both now and into the future.

The new design integrates the new acute services building with the existing hospital buildings and co-locates the emergency department with the 23-bed inpatient and maternity unit.

Streamlining care, this also facilitates intuitive navigation, separates public and ambulance circulation, and ensures improved safety and flow.

In addition, by including double-height spaces and pitched roof forms, the architects have successfully introduced much needed natural light to the hospital interior. Coupled with the inclusion of local artworks, the backlit perforated panels with Kamilaroi motifs at the entrance to the emergency department and more, this helps ensure a welcoming, friendly atmosphere.
