From the architect:

Set on an unusual heritage site in Kew, the project pairs a 1940s Interwar cottage, rich with Art Deco character, with a considered contemporary extension.

The challenge was not stylistic but structural: how to connect two distinct architectural moments so that neither diminishes the other.

The design strategy moves along a gradient. Original rooms retain their formal enclosure — the ceiling heights, the detail, the quiet dignity of the Deco — while the new addition opens outward, bright and spare, its geometry echoing the period without replicating it.

The transition between the two is calibrated rather than declared: a shift in light quality and spatial openness signals the move from old to new without announcing it.

Materials carry much of this work. A white Roman brick palette reads as continuous across old and new, while black steel frames — slender, filigreed — provide the Deco note that ties the extension to its source.

The rear of the house was reoriented towards the north-west, so that the garden, previously a service space, now becomes the principal view.

Afternoon light floods the interiors through floor-to-ceiling glazing, changing the character of the rooms across the day.

The architects frame their process around interrogation, intent and collaboration — three terms that, in their telling, describe something precise: researching the place before designing within it, committing to a clear position on intervention, and then working in close partnership with clients and trades to bring that position to life.

The outcome is a home that wears its history lightly, and its ambitions with quiet confidence.
