Designed by SAHA on behalf of sustainable housing company Otetto, Corymbia is an off-the-plan prefabricated home, made of hempcrete.

Designed for flexible living arrangements including multi-generational living, without compromising on light, liveability or sustainability, it reflects Otetto’s purpose of delivering healthier, more climate-responsive housing.

Corymbia is built using Living Canvas panels, a Structural Insulated Panel (SIPs) system made from hempcrete – a plant-based construction material crafted from hemp, which sequesters more carbon than it emits during production and installation.

The L-shaped home can be flipped and rotated to suit natural light, views and winter sun on almost any site. A customisable layout means public and private wings can be expanded to include a rumpus room, study, guest rooms or extra robes as a household’s needs change. Internally, exposed hempcrete walls sit alongside integrated timber joinery, expansive glazing and a wraparound verandah.

SAHA co-founder Harry Catterns says what first drew the practice to Otetto was that the company was already leading on sustainability.

“It’s great to have a housing model that’s architecturally designed, well-built and sustainably specified from the start,” he says.

According to Catterns, the practice’s interest in prefabricated and multi-generational housing dates back to its earliest projects, including a secondary dwelling built for a librarian and carpenter in Marrickville, who passed their home onto their children while building themselves a small studio on the same block.

Otetto Co-Founder Amanda Marsh says Corymbia reflects the group’s belief that sustainable housing should adapt to how people live.

“Corymbia is designed to work for whatever your household looks like, whether that’s a growing family, downsizers or multiple generations under one roof,” Marsh says. “It’s best suited to large lots or acreage and is designed to make the most of natural ventilation combining with the inherent insulation properties of hemp, to make for a highly liveable home.”

According to Catterns, designing for hempcrete, rather than a conventional building material, opened up possibilities the practice hadn’t anticipated.

“Because hemp has a different set of opportunities to traditional building materials, we’ve been able to experiment and use it in ways we didn’t expect at the outset,” says Catterns.

Corymbia is part of Otetto’s growing range of architecturally designed prefabricated hemp homes.
