Photographed by Luc Rémond, this project, spearheaded by Hobbs Jamieson Architecture, involved the extensive renovation and extension of a turn-of-the-century beachside residence.

The scope of works included a significant first-floor addition, a detached garage and studio, and a comprehensive refurbishment of the original single-level structure.

The property, typical of its kind, presented challenges with narrow dimensions and limited natural light. The primary objective was to maximise light penetration and ensure the efficient use of every square metre.

To overcome the spatial constraints and enhance natural light, the architects strategically increased the proportions of the new addition, creating more generous volumes on the lower level.

Unusually for a semi-detached property, the top level was set back from the shared northern boundary.

This clever design decision allows natural light to flood into the home from this aspect. Furthermore, the renovation incorporated a small pool and a tranquil garden space at the rear, creating a private retreat.

The result is a functional and light-filled development that seamlessly blends modern living with the charm of the original structure.

The home now boasts a functional floor plan, abundant natural light, and a private rear yard, complete with a few whimsical architectural elements.
