The existing heritage dwelling has been beautifully restored and period features are evident and celebrated throughout the original dwelling.

The home comprises study, formal living, master with ensuite, generous laundry and mudroom, moody powder room and open plan kitchen, meals and living on the ground floor.

The first floor comprises three bedrooms including second master with ensuite and walk in robe, bathroom and retreat.

Externally the property features a garage, outdoor entertaining area and cabana, swimming pool and beautifully landscaped gardens.

The extension features steel cladding in monument which provides a striking and contemporary contrast against the existing heritage house.

The interiors feature natural stone, herringbone floors and soft tones throughout, and while contemporary pay respect to the heritage of the home.

The home was designed for multi-generational living, with 3 generations occupying and enjoying the dwelling together. The ground floor master has it’s own private terrace to the front providing a beautiful space for the occupant to enjoy. The family also enjoy entertaining and spending time at home utilising the pool and outdoor spaces.

Architecture & Design: Can you describe the initial vision for this project and how it evolved over time?

Andrew Stapleton: The vision for this project was always to complement the existing heritage home but also be distinctly different. The new section needed to be secondary to the Spanish mission facade; contrasting in colour and form. The project went through several iterations to meet both client and council requirements, but the vision remained throughout.

What were the biggest challenges you faced during the design and construction phases, and how did you overcome them?

The existing heritage home was in bad condition, sinking and failing in several areas. To restore and maintain the heritage fabric was a challenging undertaking.

Let alone constructing a new first floor on top! Meticulous attention to detail went into the skirting, architraves and detailing of the original form. And complimenting these features in the new areas of the home was also very important.

How did you ensure that the project met the client’s needs and expectations?

We worked very closely with the clients through the process. It is a collaborative effort between, designer/client/builder. We all add value to get the best outcome.

How does this project fit into your broader portfolio and design philosophy?

Our studio always approaches each project as a unique set of constraints. Heritage value, site response, client, design aesthetic and budget are all unique to each project.

We embrace each of these and lean in! Of course we act as a guide, but each project is a reflection of the team that was involved. We also love working on heritage homes, and bringing these back to life is a privilege.
