Australia’s first Green Star – Performance rating has been awarded by the Green Building Council Australia (GBCA) to Melbourne’s 800 Bourke Street building designed by James Grose and BVN.

The commercial office, owned by GPT Group and fully tenanted by National Australia Bank, has achieved a 4 Star Green Star – Performance rating, representing ‘best practice’ in sustainable building operations.

“Gaining the first Green Star – Performance rating is the result of exceptional collaboration between a building owner and a tenant, and GPT Group and NAB now have independent, third-party proof that 800 Bourke Street meets best practice benchmarks for sustainable operations,” says Chief Executive of the GBCA, Romilly Madew.

“As 800 Bourke Street was designed and constructed before the Green Star rating system was widely known, a 4 Star Green Star – Performance rating will ensure the building continues to holds its value in a highly competitive commercial office market, while demonstrating NAB’s commitment to providing workplaces that are productive, efficient and sustainable.”

800 Bourke Street's operational performance has been assessed against nine Green Star categories:

  • Management
  • Indoor Environment Quality
  • Energy
  • Transport
  • Water
  • Materials
  • Land Use and Ecology
  • Emissions and Innovation

NAB’s Head of Environmental Sustainability, Nicola Murphy, says: “NAB’s partnership with GPT has delivered some significant results, including a 29 per cent reduction in energy consumption over the last two years. This is a great example of what can be achieved when two organisations who recognise the importance and value of sustainability come together to find smarter ways of doing things.”

“It’s no longer enough to say your company operates responsibly and sustainably – employees, customers and the wider community increasingly demand that organisations walk the talk. This 4 Star Green Star – Performance rating demonstrates that GPT Group and NAB are doing just that,” Madew concludes.

800 Bourke Street was completed in 2004. The contemporary home to the Australian head office of the National Australia Bank (NAB) is located on 62,300 sqm of north-facing waterfrontage at the Docklands Precinct in Melbourne which also includes:
