Every year, Australian Made Week gives us a moment to pause and think about what we’re building – and how we’re building it.

For me, producing locally has never been about ticking a box or chasing a label. It’s about making things that are built to last, built for the way we work, and built with a clear understanding of the local conditions our customers face every day.

When I started Moddex in regional Queensland, I wasn’t thinking about national footprints or industry statistics. I was just trying to solve a problem and add value to the work we were already doing. Fast forward 15 years, and while we now operate across Australasia, that same idea still drives how we do things.

We design, configure, and produce our systems locally because it makes sense. We know the terrain, the compliance standards, and the pace that infrastructure and construction projects need to move at. Having capability close to home means we can deliver faster, solve problems in real time, and ensure quality from pre-configuration to sending it out the door.

Why local manufacturing still matters

There’s a common perception that manufacturing in Australia is in decline. But I don’t see it that way – and the numbers back it up.

According to Manufacturing Australia, the sector contributes more than $108 billion to the economy and supports around 1.3 million jobs, directly and indirectly. That’s over 10% of our national workforce.

Zoom in on metal and fabricated metal product manufacturing, and the contribution is roughly $17.6 billion annually. That work isn’t all done in big factories. It’s happening in local warehouses, workshops, and supplier networks that keep our industry moving.

For civil works, construction and major infrastructure, locally produced systems aren’t a bonus, they’re often a can’t-do-without. Because it means:

Shorter lead times
Better quality control
Confidence in compliance
People who know the site conditions

It also gives us resilience. If the last few years have taught us anything, it’s how critical it is to have control over your supply chain. Being able to shift gears and adapt quickly isn’t just smart, it’s essential.

Producing locally doesn’t mean everything comes from the same postcode. But it does mean we’re intentional about how, where, and why we make things – and we choose to keep that value as close to home as we can.

We’re not here to fly the flag for the sake of it. We’re here because local manufacturing delivers quality, creates value, and gives us the ability to keep finding better ways to do things.

From where I sit, that’s something worth backing.
